We are often confronted with several warnings about what we post online. Nathalie Blanchard's story just reiterated how everyone must be really careful about anything they disclose on the internet. 29-year old Nathalie Blanchard, who is suffering from depression, just lost her medical benefits from her insurance provider due to some untimely Facebook pictures.
Nathalie Blanchard, an IBM employee from Bromont, Quebec, Canada, who has been on sick leave from her position for over a year and a half after being diagnosed with major depression. Manulife, her insurance provider used to send her compensation money. However, when it stopped coming this fall, Blanchard was told by the insurance company that her Facebook pictures said she was well enough to return to work.
The insurance agent even aptly described the pictures from Blanchard’s Facebook profile, reportedly those that showed her having fun at sunny beach and on a bar with friends.
That was of course the doctor's advice for her: to get out and have fun as she tries to overcome her depression. One thing that concerned her most is how Manulife got access to her Facebook pictures as hers is a private profile.
Just as the CBC tried to reach the insurance provider, Manulife clarified that they would never cancel benefits based on a few Facebook pictures, but they did confirm using Facebook in investigating insurance fraud.
With her newly hired lawyer, Ms. Blanchard is determined to conduct legal action against the insurance company.
